Important Things to Note About Security Screen Doors

When you are in the market for a security screen door, you will come across many terms that can be confusing. To avoid making a mistake, you need to know what these terms mean:

Security Doors

These are not security screen doors; they are solid doors that are built to withstand high impacts from intruders or storms. You might even find out that they are heavier than other doors and require to be installed or lifted by more than two or three people. Most security doors are made from steel that can be coated with a timber-like finish to resemble wooden doors.

Window Screens

These comprise meshes that are installed on your windows to enhance privacy, air circulation and prevent insects from entering your house. They can either be made strong to prevent impacts from intruder attempts and cyclones or weaker for those who live in areas that don't have frequent storms or neighbourhoods free from burglars.

Screen Doors

These are similar to window screens, but they are made for doors.

Security Screens

This is the name given to window screens or door screens made that are made stronger as indicated above. Security screens installed on doors are referred to as a security screen door. On the other hand, security screens installed on your windows are referred to as a security window screen.

Australian Standards

Security screen doors and security doors must undergo testing to see whether they meet Australian standards for security doors. This protects consumers from poor quality products and ensures you get your money's worth.

The two most common tests are the Jemmy and pull tests. A Jemmy test is carried out to check if the security screen door will succumb to burglar attacks. The test mimics how a burglar would use a lever to try and break into your house.

A pull test is carried out to test whether a door can withstand impacts. Weights are applied on susceptible attack points like the centre part of the mesh/security screen, the bottom and top parts of the security screen door and the opening side.

Why Install a Security Screen Door and Not a Security Door?

Security screen doors and security doors may offer you protection but may have some differences. For example, a security door may not offer better air circulation like a security screen door. This shows you that if you are torn between a security door and a security screen door, look at your needs and find out which of the two will meet them.
